I fall asleep most nights with a DVD playing and most mornings just turn off the TV and go, so it's been running solidly for a few months with no problems whatsoever. It's only ever been turned off a couple of times for a few hours and continues to work extremely well. Plays DVD's from all over the world with no problems. Great item, very happy.”

I bought it primarily to upscale my std. def. dvds and to save my xbox360 dvd drive. (and yes, 360 doesn't have 5.1 analogue output too) Pros * Upscales std. def. with HDMI or Component. Yes, I cannot honestly tell any major difference when upscaling using HTML or Component at 720p. * Easy to set up * Card reader * USB port - plays avi files if the resolution is small enough - it won't play your downloaded movies in 1024x576 or 720p, let alone 1080p - you'd better off purchase an xbox360 or playstation 3. * Sensitive remote * Easy to understand manual Cons * Does not have a "full screen" mode - so you get 2 wide black areas on your big tv screen. * Video playback quality not as good as that from xbox360 for example * Not as cheap as it could have been.”

It is apparently region free, as I am able to watch my DVD's I brought with me from the U.S. It plays those divx backups with no fuss. All in all, a good buy.”

paul from smithfield, QLD says, “Alas too good to be true (or useful) my unit arrived I plugged it up hdmi ..only stereo sound tried optical....same thing tried coax ...guess what same thing only way to get surround sound(pro logic/dts etc) is to use component video out and analog audio out!! the only reason i purchased this unit was the hdmi output.”

If the fact that it shows only 8 characters for file names and does not rip dvd's (even though it doesn't claim to) bothers you, then don't buy this unit. If you want a region free dvd player with 5.1, hdmi output, usb input that plays just about anything you throw at it then this is your box!”

David from North Sydney, NSW says, “An excellent low-cost HDMI player. They don't mention it in the specs, but it will upscale (in HDMI mode) to 720p or 1080i. I've set it to 1080i (my TV will actually do 1080p but I'll wait for Blu-Ray for that) and the image is much better than ordinary DVD. It can read media files direct from SD cards and USB keys but be aware that it's kludgy with long filenames. The only other issue for me is that it's locked to Region 4 and I haven't yet found the unlock codes :( In case you're trying to research this player, the model is DVX-5850.”
