For the inexperienced, there are ideas to try out for greetings cards, decorated gift boxes, napkin rings and place cards. For the adventurous, intricate seed collage patterns offer a greater challenge, along with illuminated lettering and other uses for gilded plant material, plus sophisticated effects imitating blackwork, gold thread, zigzag and Jacobean embroidery. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Joan Carver spent her childhood in Burton-on-Trent and Coventry, where she met her future husband, John. After his retirement from the Royal Navy and their marriage, they moved to Kent, where they owned three retail businesses and a Sub-Post Office. Now both retired, Joan and her husband live in Cambridgeshire.
Joan was first encouraged to become interested in flowers and flower arranging by her sister, and subsequently joined a number of flower clubs. As her enthusiasm for collage designs grew, she successfully took part in many national and international competitions, including winning a first prize in a Bermuda competition and two first prizes in NAFAS national competitions.
Her collages have been the main attraction in flower festivals around the country, and she has given instruction in the art of collage to students from NAFAS-affiliated flower clubs, including overseas members from India and Germany. Among other special requests over the years, she has created a collaged presented by NAFAS to the flower arrangers of Russia, which is now in St Petersburg.
