Oxford Landing Estates Merlot 2010

Oxford Landing Estates vineyard was established in 1958 on the banks of the Murray River in South Australia. With an innovative and colourful history spanning 50 years, Oxford Landing Estates has many hallmarks, including vineyard sustainability practices, down-to-earth individuals unashamedly passionate about this special place, and a collection of wines that capture and retain the natural, vibrant flavours and splendour of the Oxford Landing Estates vineyard.

Winemaking/viticulture - The Oxford Landing Merlot vines have been strategically planted on well drained sites. Careful irrigation control and management of the vineyard promotes well balanced vine canopies, thereby maximising fruit quality.

Good rainfall in spring and a relatively mild summer resulted in excellent growing conditions for the fruit for the 2010 vintage, resulting in ripe flavours balanced nicely with good tannins.

Fermentation was carried out in a combination of static and rotary fermenters under warm temperature conditions for a period of six days. This creates a good balance between extracting the appropriate tannin for wine structure and retaining fruit drive and aromatics in the final blend. The wines were stored at 6°C post fermentation to retain natural colour and aromatics of the variety.

Winemaker's comments - Magenta with brilliant purple hues, the Oxford Landing Estates Merlot 2010 displays aromas of lilac and fruit pastilles with hints of raspberry liquorice and anise. Subtle velvety tannins are a feature of the palate, which starts with generous plums and raspberries and finishes with rich jube-like fruits and black cherries. The succulent fruit flavours linger long after the wine has been consumed.
