Photo exhibition to help fight childhood blindness
To coincide with World Sight Day (October 11), The Fred Hollows Foundation is holding a special photo exhibition featuring images based around the theme of childhood blindness. The exhibition, entitled Gift of Sight: Fighting Childhood Blindness is being held at Saatchi & Saatchi, The Rocks, Sydney and entry is free. Up to 50% of cases of childhood blindness can be prevented or treated, yet it is estimated a child goes blind every minute. "Saving the sight of a child is literally the gift of a lifetime," says Gabi Hollows, Founding Director of The Fred Hollows Foundation. Statistics show that in developing countries 60% of children will die within one year of becoming blind. The remainder will spend an average of 40 years without sight. "When you give sight to a child you save them from a lifetime of hardship," says Mrs Hollows. The operation to reverse cataract blindness can cost as little as $25 in some developing countries. The exhibition features the work of photographers Michael Amendolia, Lannon Harley and Hugh Rutherford and runs from Thursday, October 4 to Friday October 12, including World Sight Day (October 11). All photos are available for sale, with proceeds going towards the fight against avoidable blindness.
